Suez Canal open for business on the 6th of August

27 July 2015

Since December 2014, the Multicat 2209 Coastal Guardian has been active in the 163 kilometers long Suez Canal to provide dredging support activities. The objective of the Suez Canal project is to expand the current canal in order for ships to pass by each other.

Less wait time for passing ships

The project was scheduled to take one year. Although some were skeptical about this, the actual work is expected to be finished in one month. A grand opening gala event will be held after a few weeks of testing. The canal is an important shipping route connecting Port Said at the Mediterranean Sea with Suez at the Red Sea. From the 6th of August the canal will be used as a two-lane highway, as opposed to a single lane, therefore reducing the wait time for ships that use the canal as a passage. It is stated that the wait time for some ships will be reduced from 22 to 11 hours.
